A Retrospective Look at Marvel's Ultimate Universe, Part 4 PDF Print E-mail

altThis week, Mike "Tokyo" Mullins wraps up his look back at Marvel's Ultimate comics line, with Part 4: Odds & Ends.  You can read the first three parts here: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

Marvel produced far too many mini series in their Ultimate line for me to give you a run down on every one of them. I could, but I'm sure you would get bored of reading my schlock for 5 pages or so. Instead I will just give a brief rundown and grade on these titles. Got it? Good.

On to the titles!

altMike Mullins continues his journey through the history of Marvel's Ultimates Comics line.  You can read the earlier chapters here: Part 1 Part 2

February 2002 was an epic day, in my humble opinion, for the Ultimate Universe. A book launched that gives me shortness of breath and sweaty palms just thinking about it. The Ultimates (the Ultimate version of the Avengers) began, and it was everything I hoped it would be. The core team of Captain America, The Wasp, Giant-Man and Iron Man were a small, but dysfunctional group. S.H.I.E.L.D. and Dr. Bruce Banner had been trying to re-create the super soldier serum that made Captain America what he was, but to no avail.

Andy Cirinesi

Since we announced that Mike's health was not well many of you have asked us for an update.

I wish I had better news to report, but, unfortunately, his condition has worsened. I have been speaking to him a couple of times a week by phone and getting over to his house about once a week and his spirits remain high.

Due to a bad spell, he ended up back in the hospital this past Saturday. When I went by to visit him, he wanted me to thank everybody who took the time to write or send a card.  I can tell you that it meant the world to him to receive them and truly brightened his spirits.

He was especially moved by those of you who made him a homemade card or drew a superhero picture in your card. He does want you to know that, while none of you appear to have any artistic talent whatsoever (except for you, Scratch), you are all wonderful people and he is forever grateful that you took the time to write him the cards and letters.

For our part, we are hopeful that the big lug will knock off all of this 'sick crap' and get back to work as his efforts are truly missed. In the meantime, I will be happy to continue to forward any cards or well wishes his way so feel free to pass them along to us here at the shop.

Just this guy, you know? One of my favorite parts of this job is getting to dig through piles of old stuff and find something that doesn't necessarily have any monetary value, but gives me a glimpse into the past.  How people thought, or what the prevailing social norms were.

This week, a copy of Physical Culture magazine from October, 1920 popped up, and it is jammed full of little gems for thought.

Mike Mullins

This is the second of a three part article series about Marvel Comics' Ultimate imprint.  If you missed the first part, you can read it here!

February of 2001 saw the launch of the second ongoing title of the Ultimate Marvel imprint: Ultimate X-Men. Brian Michael Bendis was offered the job of writing Ultimate X-Men, due to his success with Ultimate Spider-Man, but he declined. This left the door open for Mark Millar (who, lucky for us, happened to know next to nothing about the 616 X-Men) to take the helm and give us a gritty, fresh look at our favorite mutants.

Just like its predecessor, Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men started off with a bang.
